Cairo – At least 32 people were killed when several vehicles collided in the Egyptian governorate of Bahariyah, which lies between Cairo and Alexandria. With reference to the Egyptian media, Reuters reported about it. At least six dozen people are injured.
According to police sources, the fire was caused by an oil leak from one car; subsequently other vehicles also started to burn. Egyptian media said the crash was caused by a bus driver who rammed into a parked vehicle during a foggy morning, the AP agency wrote.
The fire blocked traffic on the main route between the Egyptian capital and Alexandria, about 132 kilometers north of Cairo. Authorities sent rescue equipment, ambulances and firefighters to the scene.
In Egypt, the poor condition of roads and non-compliance with traffic regulations lead to many traffic accidents every year. In 2021, they claimed over 7,000 lives in the country of roughly 110 million people, which, according to the Egyptian Statistics Authority, is a fifteen percent increase compared to the previous year. In 2021, 470 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in the Czech Republic with a population of ten million.
